| | Art and History | Teacher/Artist Mark Stankiewicz brings students back in time to art forms that have given archaeologists clues as to how past cultures lived. Egyptian Canopic Jars – Students learn about how the Egyptians preserved vital organs in special jars with lids representing protective gods. Students will create their own canopic jar using a recycled milk bottle covered with plaster gauze as the base and model magic for the sculptured top. A pencil drawn design that includes hieroglyphs can be added. If workshop is extended to a mini-residency, additional design work is possible and the final sculpture will be painted with acrylic paint.
Grades 4-8 Cave Painting – Lights out – flashlights on! Artist Mark Stankiewicz guides students through the experience of cave painting, by having them work as a group in dim light, on a large piece of paper taped to the wall. Students learn the history of this art form as they express themselves using only brushes and brown paint to create the artwork in their “cave.” Additional detail is possible if extended to a mini-residency.
Grades K-5 | | Art and Science | The Arts touch all our senses and make us more aware of movement, color and light. Teacher/Artist Mark Stankiewicz beautifully blends science and art in these workshops. The Sight of Sound – This workshop is about the similarities between visual art and music, using some of the vocabulary from both. Mark talks about and shows examples by artists who were inspired by music like Joan Miro, Paul Klee and Georgia O'Keeffe. Students listen to samples of songs and sound effects and create artwork based on the feeling they get from listening.
Grades 2-8 Refracted & Reflected Light – Mark explains refraction and reflection, and the way in which both scientists and artists create experiments. A selection of historic photographs is shown and the differences between a photograph and a photogram are discussed. Students then use nature print paper and different types of objects to create a photogram and a piece of art. A mini-residency allows for more concepts to be explored.
Grades 4-12 The Human Body - Figure Drawing – Figure Drawing is based on observation. As the models freeze in a variety of action poses, students will be asked to think about what makes a body move. Mark will discuss proportion, balance and how to draw movement in art. They will then look at and draw from wooden drawing mannequins and Mark will explain how to simplify the body into ovals and circles to draw. Workshop is adjusted to suit grade level. A mini-residency is availalbe and allows for more detailed drawing techniques, including shading.
