An accomplished poet, writer, and educator, Laura Boss deals with universal issues critical to the immigrant experience. Themes include “The Journey,” existing as a “Culture Within a Culture,” and “Celebrating the Homeland.” Students develop their own poetry focused on these topics. Grades K-12 | | Political Cartooning | A creative outlet for the expression of social or political views, Political Cartooning has made its mark in history by raising concerns, spurring debate, fostering change, and even swaying public opinion. In the 1870s, corrupt NY politician William M. “ Boss” Tweed, went so far as to blame Thomas Nast’s cartoons for his downfall. Cartoonist Steve Nyman will explore the history and social issues surrounding Political Cartooning and students will create their own political caricature. Curriculum Connection: Social Studies
Grades 5-12 |  | Pond Dabbling | Environmental Studies This is a hands-on, aquatic invertebrate, live creature experience with environmentalist Betty Boomer. What lurks under the surface of a pond? Using simple hand tools, students delight in discovering the many different life forms that live in a pond and learning about their life cycles. This is an up-close, interactive workshop – fun, exciting and educational. The natural role and importance of wetlands is also emphasized. Grades 3-8; Variations of this program are available for younger groups as well
